丁酉(鸡)年十月初八

It is hard to read and totally understand these eight paragraphs. Because there are many new words in the article, I have to look them up in the direction. In another aspect, some sentences are long; they are not so easy to understand.

The first sentence of paragraph one is a metaphor. It appeals to me that "scholastic cheating" is a big problem in America. People are not honest to treat with this problem. It is the meaning of this paragraph.

The author says that most of the students have the common feeling about cheating when. They more or less cheated when they were young, but when they grow up, they never cheat again. If it was true and was as simple as they said, the author would not say it is as frustrating as surveying American eating patterns. So their teachers' opinion is different with them. They think the problem of "cheating" run through their whole studying life. From elementary to college, the habit of cheating is formed.

So schools consider about many kinds of methods in order to avoid cheating. But I think it is not useful, because the root of the problem is not solved. I agree to the psychologists' opinion in paragraph four. In my view, parents are the first teacher of their children, home is the place where parents should help to cultivate children' self-respect, so they do not think occasional failure will threaten their future and parents should teach them what is right and what is wrong to overcome the impulse to cheat. It is my understanding about the last sentence of paragraph four.

The author quote Patrick L. Daly' words in paragraph five, because he is an experienced teacher. As he says, we know that the parents do not know how to teach their children that cheating is dishonest. I think it is the root of the problem.

The first sentence of paragraph seven is difficult to understand. In my opinion, it means the teachers and psychologists say that what is the most troubling is perhaps that the most talented students who could get good grades without cheating are often the worst offenders. They are all good students, and they never cheat. I have no idea that why does the author say they are the most troubling.

What is the meaning of "making cheating a way of life" in the first sentence of paragraph? It seems to say that the college students and high scholars both often cheat in their daily life. This kind of act is not honest, and it will affect their whole life.
